Take 9" away from the total of your inseam if you plan to get a road bike. This is down to the tires a road bike equips. Designed for cycling around the city road bike tires are thin. For a mountain bike you will need to take 12" away from your total inseam. The tires on a mountain bike are not the same as a road bike. Mountain bike tires will be thick and designed for mountainous terrain. You can use mountain bikes for city cycling, but the opposite is not true and they are nowhere near as good on city streets as road bikes.
Never leave out the safety gear, either. Bicycle helmets have come a long way since they were first introduced. Not only do they look a lot better than they used to, they are also built better to provide greater protection. You must always wear your helmet when you are riding your bike, no matter what. You never know when that little detail is going to save you from an early grave.
It wouldn't hurt to also grab some elbow and knee guards, as well as ankle and wrist guards, just in case you decide to take your bike off the road.
